Matt Peron, Director of Research and Portfolio Manager at Janus Henderson, offers his insights on core inflation.
“Today's batch of economic releases fell "right down the middle" for the equity market. There was strong consumer spending, but inflation, while elevated, was tamer than expected. This confirms a recent trend we have seen around strong economic activity which should continue to drive robust earnings growth. Inflation, however, can be an anathema to equity price-to-earnings multiples and the market will watch for clues that inflation is running away. Today's release should calm some of the worst-case inflation fears, at least for now.”
