Below is a comment by James McCann, Senior Global Economist at Aberdeen Standard Investments, on President Trump's tweet to stop discussions with Democrats about stimulus measures until after the elections. “We’ll get robust polling at the end of this week but until then it’s too soon to say how Trump contracting coronavirus might impact his re-election chances.”

Especially with the timeline for his recovery uncertain. The one thing that we can be sure about is that this changes the discourse around the election. Trump has spent weeks doing everything he can to avoid talking about the virus, an issue he polls horribly on. “This episode moves the virus back into the centre of any and all debate around the election. The only person who benefits from that scrutiny is Joe Biden”, says James McCann.

McCann continues: “The irony of Trump calling off talks with the Democrats is that a blockbuster stimulus package is the one thing that could have shifted the narrative. Instead he has just raised the stakes for the election. Investors are left to wonder if the election will deliver a White House and Congress intent and able to get something done, or willing risk a nascent recovery petering out.”
